African savannah with shrubs and acacias, sandy dry riverbeds, massive granite mountain tops and table mountains are characteristic of the wildly romantic scenery of Damaraland. Namibia‘s original inhabitants carved animals and mysterious symbols into the reddish-brown sandstone at Twyfelfontein, now a World Heritage site. The Vingerklip rock stack of solidified sediments, the Organ Pipes of basalt and the tree trunks of stone on the other hand are nature‘s works of art.
Springbok and oryx antelope graze in the savannah; the famous desert-adapted elephants move through the dry riverbeds.
Built in the wattle and daub style under Mopane trees and connected by a labyrinth of paths, the main building and chalets of the lodge look like an African village. The walls are adorned by copies of the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. Each of the 55 double room chalets (with air conditioning) sits in a vegetable and herb garden surrounded by a low wall.
The gardens supply fresh ingredients for supper, which consists of a hot starter followed by a delicious platter. There is a swimming pool for chilling out and a viewing point for relishing sunsets and the star-studded night sky.
The lodge at the gates of Damaraland is ideally suited for excursions to Twyfelfontein (130 km), the Petrified Forest (55 km) and the Vingerklip rock stack (50 km).
Starting from N$2170
Air-conditioning and mosquito nets are standard as is a personal veranda. Each plot has its own vegetable and herb garden enclosed by a low wall. Lettuce, radishes, melons, pumpkins and tomatoes are grown alongside the more traditional African staple food such as maize and mahangu, adding to the illusion of spending the night in an African village.
Sunset Walk (escorted)
A highlight at the end of the day is to ascend the hill to a viewing platform for a sweeping vista of the mopane woodland illuminated by the setting sun. Beverages are provided and charged to the room.
Hiking Trails (self-guided)
Explore the flora and fauna of the Damaraland on your own. You have two different self-guided hiking trails to choose from. They are well marked and take you through the wildly romantic scenery of the Damara Mopane Lodge house mountain. Duration: between 1 and 3 hours.
Guests can visit the following attractions on their own:
Twyfelfontein: Proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 2007, Twyfelfontein contains around 2,000 rock engravings and one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 1952 and as many as 40,000 people a year now visit the site, making it one of the more popular tourist destinations in Namibia.
Petrified Forest: The trees of the Petrified Forest were uprooted some 200 million years ago and were swept along by rivers in flood, covered by sediments and then subsequently uncovered by erosion.
Vingerklip: Vingerklip (Finger Rock) is a 35m high pillar of sedimentary rock and is one of the most impressive rock formations in Namibia. It stands proudly above a valley, known as the Ugab terraces.
Desert-adapted elephants: The western regions of Damaraland are home to the famous desert-adapted elephants. These beautiful animals move mainly around dry riverbeds, surviving and living on the foliage of trees and shrubs provided by rivers and seasonal rains.
